So I made mention on my twitter feed earlier that I would explain why I have been AWOL from social media for some time now.  Well my employer is in the middle of building a new facility so we can conduct business there instead of leasing the building we are in.  Since I am head of I.T. for the company it’s my job to make sure the new building has everything we need technology wise.  Turns out that is easier said then done.

So armed with construction blue prints and a trusty Excel spreadsheet I proceeded to map out exactly how our computer infrastructure was to be deployed in the new building.  This took weeks to get done.  Going through all the drawings and trying to work out all the details in your head is very hard.  I spent a good deal of time researching products online trying to make sure I was going to be purchasing the correct ones.

Once I found all the products and got the entire office and warehouse drawn out..  I compiled a list of parts I would need in Excel and whom I would buy them from.  After all we do have to make sure this all stays within budget.    Once the list was complete and I verified it 5-6 times, I proceeded to order the necessary parts for the facility.  This took a couple of days to get all the orders in place.  Thankfully I got the last order in on a Friday afternoon because my brain was shot.

Since that Friday we have had a number of things change which effected the I.T. infrastructure.  So I have been spending all of my time dealing with those changes and making sure that everything is to come together properly.  This kept me extremely busy up until Tuesday of this week when we got the final details set.

So here’s my advice.  If your ever thinking of building your own facility, home, warehouse or office… Don’t.  At least don’t if you don’t HAVE to. Yeah its great that you would get exactly what your looking for and your able to customize it to your exact needs, but it’s a huge amount of work.  There are many details to go over with contractors and a overwhelming amount of decisions that have to be made.  Kind of a PITA.  Just keep it in mind!
